July and the Summer Garden Comes to a Close

July Brings A Close to Our Summer Garden

The Asian Long Beans were an exceptional plant and have not stopped producing crop. Trouble free, prolific plants with beans up to 20 inches long, which are just now being troubled by aphids.
I am considering planting more of the southern heat tolerant Asian strains of vegetables for next years garden.

The raised bed. Tomatoes were pecked daily by the birds. I tried different devices and the one that seemed to frighten them was an iridescent reflecting ball on a pole.

Volunteer tomato, pumpkin and cukes bed.

The results of the small tomato crop of 2011...dismal. The hardiest plants were those volunteers which I allowed to grow. The smallish mid- size tomatoes in the basket below were the volunteers. The perfect size for salads, just one is a nice mouth full.

The tomato above with the green shoulders is a Heirloom Carbon Tomato, which was a Lagnappe seed pack sent with my Spring seed order from Sustainable Seeds! Sweet customer service!
